MICHAEL SEMPERT

Michael Sempert's films scores are distinguished by their raw emotion, sonic craftsmanship and a rare authenticity born from creative experimentation. He has composed original scores for over a dozen feature films including award-winning indies, COTTON FEVER, THE PROTECTOR, SUMMONING THE SPIRIT as well as the Nickelodeon TV movie BIXLER HIGH PRIVATE EYE.  Sempert's film music centers intriguing melodic themes, supported by textural atmospherics and multi-dimensional ambiance. He imbues all of his music with the soul of an artist, allowing his own curiosity and empathy for the human condition to shine through the work.  Sempert collaborates with filmmakers in bringing their visions to life, with a passion for characters and the stories they inhabit.

Sempert's original songs have been licensed for television by ABC's GREY'S ANATOMY, Netflix' BLOODLINE, Disney+' JUST BEYOND and many more. His song "Strange Kind of Mirror" was described by BON IVER'S Justin Vernon as "an all-timer for me... one of those tunes I've listened to on repeat for weeks on end... It's a perfect song."

Mike graduated from the double-degree program at Tufts and New England Conservatory of Music ('04) in his home town of Boston, MA with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Composition.

While living in the Bay Area of California, Sempert was lead singer and band-leader for Birds & Batteries, writing and producing five critically acclaimed albums and performing hundreds of shows around the US. Pitchfork described their 2009 EP Up To No Good as "a high-concept mashup of two of the slickest eras of pop production."

Since 2014, Sempert has released four solo singer-songwriter albums as well as two albums of electronic/jazz fusion under the moniker Volcanic Legacy.

Sempert continues to explore new sounds, forms and musical expression with a joyful approach to creative collaboration. He enjoys drinking espresso, skiing mountains and being goofy with his kids.
